Transforming Africa: The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Pretoria

Since January 2014, the Mastercard Foundation and the University of Pretoria (UP) have been providing wraparound assistance and funding to high-achieving young Africans pursuing undergraduate and graduate (Masters and Honors) degrees.

In order to help more young people on the continent, the University and the Foundation signed a phase two agreement in December 2023. A fresh phase 2 cohort started their trials in January 2024.

The target audiences are young scholars with academic aptitude who are confronted with social and economic obstacles, such as people with disabilities and internally displaced people or refugees. Their leadership demonstrates their knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and values, which will help transform the continent.

Along with entrepreneurship, community service and internships are crucial elements of the program. Graduates pledge to contribute in ways that advance the social and economic advancement of their communities and the continent after completing their education.
