    Background/IRC Summary:

     Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to serious humanitarian crises around the world and helps victims to survive and rebuild their lives.   

    For over half a century, Tanzania has been a country of asylum, hosting one of the largest refugee populations in Africa. Currently, the country hosts approximately 287,903 Burundian and Congolese refugees, many of whom arrived in 2015 as the crisis in Burundi increased. To date, refugees continue to co-exist with the host communities in Kigoma region expressing multiple reasons and needs. Within this context, IRC provides protection and basic assistance in the areas of Safety (comprises of Protection and Rule of Law, Women Protection and Empowerment, and Child Protection), Health (mental health and psychosocial support services and reproductive health), and Education. 

     Job Overview: 

    Reproductive and Child Health Nurses are integral to IRC’s efforts in promoting maternal and child well-being in the Kigoma Region. They will be responsible for implementing reproductive health programs, providing maternal and child healthcare services, and facilitating community education and outreach activities. 

    Major Responsibilities: Key Areas 

    Reproductive and Child Health Services 

    • Provide antenatal, postnatal, and family planning services to women, ensuring comprehensive care throughout the reproductive lifecycle. 
    • Conduct maternal and child health assessments, including growth monitoring, immunizations, and nutritional counselling. 
    • Support safe delivery practices and provide essential newborn care interventions. 
    • Offer counselling and education on maternal and child health issues to mothers and families, emphasizing preventive measures and healthy behaviors. 

    Drugs/Supplies 

    • Collaborate with the pharmacy team to handle essential drugs at the health center and ensure their rational use. 
    • Assist in implementing pharmacovigilance on general outpatient drugs. 

    Trainings 

    • Participate in on-the-job training for health staff at health posts as appropriate. 

    Program Support 

    • Assist in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of reproductive and child health activities in collaboration with program staff. 
    • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of service delivery, including patient records and program reports. 

    Key Working Relationships: 

    • Position Reports to: Head Nurse 
    • Position directly supervises: Assistant nurses (Incentive workers) 
    • Other Internal and/or external contacts: Health Post staffs, community health workers, program partners       

     

    Qualifications

     

    • Certificate/Diploma in Nursing 
    • Registered with the Nursing Council of Tanganyika and possess a valid practicing license 
    • Experience in maternal and child healthcare, preferably in a primary healthcare setting in the humanitarian settings. 

    Demonstrated Skills and Competencies: 

    • Strong clinical skills in reproductive and child health. 
    • Effective communication and counselling skills, particularly in engaging with women and families. 
    • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and community members Adaptability and flexibility to meet the evolving needs of the program. 
    • Proficiency in English and Swahili languages, Kirundi is an added advantage. 

     Language: English and Swahili, Kirundi is an added advantage

    Working Environment: Security level yellow – The situation in most of the country is calm. Some parts of Kigoma region experience insecurity-highway banditry.
